Have you ever heard someone say something to the effect of “Men judge appearances and actions, but God judges the heart.” Typically this is meant as some type of comfort to imply, “Don’t worry, God knows you are good on the inside.” The truth is absolutely the opposite. We should be terrified that God judges our hearts.
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the heart (Proverbs 21:2)
We tend to think of ourselves as pretty good, often when comparing ourselves to others or at least to Hitler. The bad news is that God sees into the wickedness of our hearts and judges that in addition to our actions. But, that is also good news to those of us who have our sins forgiven by the blood of Christ Jesus. We do not have to worry that the secret sins of our heart are unknown to God. Even those sins, the sins we try to bury deep inside us so no one else knows, can be forgiven.
For those who die without Christ – God knows your heart and it is really bad news.
For those who are in Christ – God knows your heart and it is terrifically good news.
