And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God (Colossians 3:14-16).
There are so many places in Scripture where we are encouraged, directed, and I would say even commanded to be part of a local congregation. This passage is just one of the many examples. These 3 verses would make no sense in the life of a Lone Ranger Christian. In this context, who do they love besides themselves? With whom do they need to have peace? Do they teach and admonish themselves in the mirror? Do they sing psalms in the shower giving thanks to God that they do not have to surround themselves with other sinners?
The flip side of this is that the church (assembly of believers) was given to us by Christ for our benefit, our encouragement, our joy, our discipline, and our strengthening in the faith. Why would we want to neglect so great a blessing? So, listen to the apostle Paul and be a part of the body of Christ this, and every, Sunday.
