Pray and set a guard – Nehemiah 4:9

And we prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night (Nehemiah 4:9).

I love the simplicity of this verse. The people were trying to rebuild the city of Jerusalem and facing threats from those in opposition. They prayed for God to protect them AND they prepared for battle, if necessary. Similarly, we should pray for God to provide for us AND we should work diligently to that same end. Because God ordains not only the outcome, but the means. His method of protecting the Israelites included using those guards. His method of providing for us includes giving us jobs.
